New ownership

OtherPosted by Ulf Elmgren 20 Mar, 2009 14:52

Environmental Mechanics AB (Envi) in Alingsås, Sweden has new owners from start of 2009. Former owner Kjell Elmgren has sold the company to his two sons in law, Ulf Elmgren and Per Ljunggren after having run the company for more than 25 years. Kjell will retire but will assist as mentor and with ideas also in the future.

Ulf has worked at Envi for 5 years being responsible for purchasing and sales. Ulf has a background as service technician and as responsible for spare parts and services at Atlas Copco. Per is M.Sc.Ee and has a background as within IT and Electronics as developer, project manager and R&D manager.

The company profile has been and will continue to be development, production and sales of geotechnical instrumentation and probes. The focus will now more clearly also be on environmental instrumentation and probes. Several new and updated products will be released during 2009.

CPT versus SPT

EventsPosted by News blog admin 23 Oct, 2007 10:56

In September 2007, ENVI visited our supplier AMS in Idaho, the main object was the exhibition in Los Angeles, AEG 2007.

For three days we made new and old contacts to present the CPTu method for the American market. The most common method yet in US, is the SPT-method.

If you compare the two methods you quite easy can tell, that the SPT is the old, not that effective method and that the CPTu is the future, and more effective way to do tests in the ground.

The CPT is performed with a cylindrical penetrometer with a conical tip (cone) penetrating into the ground at a constant rate of penetration 1,2 meter/60 second the probe registered data every second so you will have a reading of the soil every 2cm. During the penetration, the forces on the cone, the friction sleeve and the pore pressure are measured. The measurements are carried out using electronic transfer and data logging, with a measurement frequency that can secure detailed information about the soil conditions.

The results from a cone penetration test can in principle be used to evaluate:

*stratification

*soil type

*soil density and in in-situ stress conditions

*shear strength parameters

SPT test: This is a dynamic test and is a measure of the density of the soil. The test incorporates a small diameter tube with a cutting shoe known as the 'split barrel sampler' of about 650mm length, 50mm external diameter and 35mm internal diameter. The sampler is forced into the soil dynamically using blows from a 63.5kg hammer dropped through 760mm. The sampler is forced 150mm into the soil then the number of blows required to lower the sampler each 75mm up to a depth of 300mm is recorded. This is known as the "N" value. For coarse gravels the split barrel is replaced by a 60 degree cone.

Site Improvement

Site NewsPosted by News blog admin 18 Sep, 2007 12:51
We have a added a Geo-technical discussion forum to the site. To be a member go to our www.envi.se and choose forum and follow the instructions

Also, you can now find a part list for CPT-u we hope that this will make it easier and increase the service for our customers

Pore Pressure Filters

OtherPosted by News blog admin 11 Sep, 2007 09:21

COMPARISON BETWEEN SLOT FILTER AND POROUS FILTER.

Dr Nguyen Vu at Portcoast Consultants in HCM City, Vietnam, has been using both Slot filters and Porous filters extensively for a couple of years now.

He says: "Attached here please find CPTu results from Saigon Premier Container Terminal. Slot and Porous filters have been used at the same location. Using Slot filter gave the same results, but has the better superiority than porous: it can be advanced in unsaturated sandfill, so that we can get the density of the fill."

The plots below show comparison CPTu test. Red is the Slot filter and Blue is Porous type.Blog Image

NGWA 2006 Ground Water Expo

EventsPosted by News blog admin 07 Sep, 2007 12:39
Blog Image
During December AMS and Envi together attended the National Ground Water Association 2006 Ground Water Expo in Las Vegas. We presented the benefits of using CPTu, compared to SPT, as a method for examining contaminated soils, locating soil layers, and determining the ground water table.
In combination with analysis and interpretation by the software CPT-Pro, you can achieve more accurate and more efficient results.

New software for plotting CPT and MWD

OtherPosted by News blog admin 07 Sep, 2007 12:36

A new freeware PC software for the plotting of CPTU, MWD, Jet Grouting and DCM data is available. The name of the program is Opensounding and it can be downloaded from from the address: opensounding.sourceforge.net

The program utilizes JAVA language, so this also has to be loaded. Input data formats are a) Swedish Geotechnical society STD format, and b) generic type TXT format ( EXCEL type). Both these formats can be downloaded from Envi data loggers. Auto scaling is included, but there also are possibilities to change scales and the width of the diagrams.

Blog ImageFor CPTU, the program can plot qc-fs-u and inclination. It will also calculate the friction ratio. For further evaluation, two types of soil profile interpretation is provided: 1) Robertson 86 using qc and fr, and 2) Eslam Fellenius 97 which makes use of effective cone resistance qT - u2 against friction.

Blog ImageFor MWD, the program provides the possibility of calculating the specific energy from the measured parameters. The diagram above shows a typical MWD (Measure While Drilling) recording of a rotary drilling. Of special interest in this case are the two cavities indicated by the specific energy diagram at 26.5 meters and between 29.5 and 32.5 meters. The energy needed to drill trough these parts is zero, clearly indicating a cavity. At the lower one, also the flush water pressure drops.

Real time reading of CPTu data using acoustic transmission

Product NewsPosted by New blog admin 07 Sep, 2007 12:32
The latest development of the well known Memocone includes CPTU data and inclination being transmitted in real time to the data collector on the surface by means of sound waves in the pushing rods. In this way, the operator is able to check the readings from the cone in real time, with the data being up-dated every second. Like before, all data are stored inside the back-up memory of the Memocone and will be downloaded after the test. This means that if the sound transmission, for any reason is disturbed, all readings will still be kept in the memory and can be accessed.
Blog Image

Memocone type III now has 3 different ways of data transmission / collection.

CABLE mode: The "old" way of conveying data from the cone, with a cable running inside the pushing rods.
MEMORY mode: All data is collected inside the cone and downloaded after test.
ACOUSTIC mode: All data is transmitted to the surface by means of sound waves traveling in the pushing rods.

Memocone type III is normally using both MEMORY and ACOUSTIC modes thus offering double safety of the recorded data. In order to utilize this new development, you will need a microphone installed in the pushing head and a sound receiver unit connected to your C-mon / D-mon or PC-mon data logger. It can be used with Geoprinter 60 using the "cable" mode but in this case, it will only be possible to get a data file from the acoustic transmission, not from the internal memory of the Memocone. All existing Memocone type II can be modified to type III. The Battery tube has to be replaced by a "Sound transmitter" type battery tube. The Memocone III can still be used in the "Memory mode" and " Cable mode" if you choose not to use the acoustic option. Memocone type I can not be modified directly to type III.
